川越まつり 2022・ユネスコ無形文化遺産/ Kawagoe Festival in JAPAN , UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage


川越まつりとは？

2022年10月15日、16日の両日、埼玉県川越市で、川越まつりが開催されました。コロナ禍で3年ぶりの開催となりました。川越まつりは、慶安4年、川越藩主松平信綱の命により始められた神幸祭が起源だそうで、城下町の総鎮守氷川神社が行う「例大祭」と「神幸祭」を根源とする祭祀と氏子、町衆が行う祭礼の山車行事です。また平成28年にはユネスコ無形文化遺産に登録されました。江戸の「天下祭」の面影を色濃く残した絢爛豪華な都市祭礼となっています。

 

川越の小江戸の意味とは？

前に地元の方に聴いたのですが、川越の新河岸川はやがて荒川に注ぎ、隅田川となるそうで、江戸時代初期から昭和始めまでの約300年間、川越と江戸を結ぶこの流れを数多くの舟が行き来しており、当時は、地元の鰻や、豊富な農作物など舟運で交易をしていたが、人や物資を載せて運んだだけではなく、川越と江戸を強く結ぶ役目を果たし川越に深く根付いた江戸文化は、この舟運にてもたらされたようです。

 

二日目のまつり　2022年10月16日

私は、多く方からの一度は行った方がいいよ！と言う勧めもあり、この日は、まつりの本番は昼過ぎくらいと言う事で、人生初で友人と2日目のお昼前から出掛けて行きました。川越駅から商店街を通り抜け、メイン会場のる市役所前や、大正ロマン夢通り、蔵造りの街並みなどへ、片道ゆっくり20分程かけて歩き、祭り中も趣ある小道や商店など、総計１万歩以上を歩き回りました。

 

川越祭りの一番の見所は、初日の夜の宵山ですが、山車同士が出会うと回り舞台が回転し、山車同士が向かい合い囃子台の上にいる囃子連によるお囃子で競い合うそうですが、今年は密を避けるため、山車同士の儀礼囃子のみとなったようです。

それでも、川越市市制施行100周年記念と言う事もあり、川越市内の稼働できる全て28台の山車が参加し、特に日が暮れると主要場所に殆どの山車や人が集まり、前に進めない程の賑わいでした。また多くの外国人観光客（きちんと着物姿での）も戻っていたのも印象的でした。まつりの主催関係者や地元の方々は、久しぶりに通常の賑わいが戻って来て安堵と喜びと、街全体が活力に沸いたように見えました。

What is the Kawagoe Festival?

The Kawagoe Festival was held in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture on October 15th and 16th, 2022, It's been 3 years since the corona’ influence. The Kawagoe Festival is said to have originated from the Shinko Festival, which was started by order of the lord of the Kawagoe Domain, Nobutsuna Matsudaira, in the 4th year of the Keian Era. It is a festival float event held by cities people. It was also registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016. It is a gorgeous city festival that strongly holds the remnants of Edo's "Tenka Festival".

 

Why is Kawagoe called Little Edo?

I heard from a local person before that the Shingashi River in Kawagoe will eventually flow into the Arakawa River and become the Sumida River in Tokyo. As boats traveled always back and forth at that time, local eels and rich agricultural products were traded by boat in the past. Not only did it carry people and goods, but it also played a role in strongly connecting Kawagoe and Edo (Tokyo). It seems that the Edo (Tokyo) culture, which was deeply rooted in Japan, was brought about by this boat transportation.

 

The 2nd Day Festival on October 16, 2022

A couple of friends urged me that I would better to go at least once to the Kawagoe Festival. So for the first time in my life, I went out with my friend before noon on the second day. We went through the shopping street from Kawagoe Station and walked slowly for about 20 minutes each way to the city hall where the main site is, Taisho Roman Yume Street, and the streets of Kurazukuri.

 

The highlight of the Kawagoe Festival is the Yoiyama on the first night. When the festival car meet each other, the revolving stage rotates and the festival cars face each other and compete with each other by the musical accompaniment and participant groups on the festival car stage.

 

As it is the 100th anniversary of Kawagoe City's establishment as a city this year, all 28 festival cars that can be operated participating in Kawagoe. It was also impressive that many foreign tourists (properly dressed in kimono) had returned this year. The festival organizers and locals were relieved and happy that the usual activity had returned after a long time during corona’s hardship, and the whole city seemed to be filled with vitality.
