『東京大仏』を知っていますか？/ Do you know "Tokyo ( Great Buddha) "?
■東京都板橋区にある「乗蓮寺」は、徳川家康から10石の朱印地を寄進された浄土宗のお寺で、東京大仏は、東京大空襲、関東大震災などの悲惨な戦災・震災が起きないように願いを込めて、昭和52年に建立され、板橋十景の一つになっています。また東京都選定の”新東京百景”に東京大仏が板橋区で唯一選ばれているそうです。
歴史を遡ると、天保飢饉供養塔は板橋市の文化財でもあり、やはり昔から、戦争のみならず、度重なる自然災害、飢えや疾病に人々は苦しんでいたのですね。寛永・享保・天明に続く江戸四大飢饉の一つ、天保の大飢饉は、天保4年（1833年）の大雨による洪水や冷害による大凶作が原因で、飢や疫病にかかり5年間で125万2000人が命を失う大惨事を招いたとあります。乗蓮寺の天保飢饉供養塔は、時の住職・撮譽上人が、板橋宿内の犠牲者を寺内に埋葬しその菩提を弔うために建立したと言う事です。
東京大仏参詣
10月ある日曜日の昼下がり、参詣と散策を兼ねてここを訪れました。この辺りは、普段からとても閑静で、七福神や石像が点在する境内は穏やかさに包まれ、参詣者もまばらでしたが、季節柄、かりんの樹はたわわに実り、ススキや、オミナエシ、ナデシコなどが盛りで、子供達が鯉に餌やりする姿などを眺めながら、のんびりと静かに、御詣りしたあと、周辺の板橋区立美術館、板橋区立植物園、曹洞宗松月院を散策もしてすがすがしい時間が過ごせました。
■昭和52年建立東京大仏（阿弥陀如来坐像）は、高さ13mの青銅製で重さが32t。青銅製の鋳造大仏としては、奈良（東大寺大仏／14.98m、台座別で250t）、鎌倉（高徳院大仏／11.39m、121t）、高岡大仏（15.85m、13t）、兵庫大仏（能福寺大仏／11m、60t）などと並ぶ巨大な大仏です。
・特徴的なのは、境内には世界初五大陸最高峰登頂者で、世界的冒険家として冬のマッキンリーに消えた植村直己氏のお墓があります。（植村氏は15年間板橋区で暮らし、東板橋公園でトレーニングもされた様子でこちらに大変ゆかりのある方なのですね。）

"Jorenji" in Itabashi-ku, in Tokyo is a temple of the Jodo Shinshu which was donated by Ieyasu Tokugawa.. It was built in 1977 with the hope that tragic war and earthquake disasters such as the Great Tokyo Air Raid and the Great Tokyo Earthquake will not occur. It is one of the 10 views of Itabashi. In addition, it seems that the Tokyo Daibutsu is the only one in Itabashi Ward that has been elected as one of the "New Tokyo 100 Views" selected by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Going back in history, the Tenpo Famine Memorial Pagoda is also a cultural asset of Itabashi City, and since ancient times, people have suffered not only from war but also from repeated natural disasters, hunger and disease.
Temple Visit
I visited there on a Sunday afternoon in October for a pilgrimage and a walk. This area was usually very quiet, and the shrine grounds dotted with the Seven Lucky Gods and stone statues were filled with tranquility, and there were few pilgrims. You can spend a refreshing time walking around the Itabashi Museum of Art, the Itabashi Botanical Garden, and the Shogetsu-in Temple near there.
■The Great Buddha of Tokyo (Seated Amida Nyorai), built in 1977 has 13 meters high and weighs 32 tons. There are bronze Great Buddha statues including Nara (Todaiji Great Buddha/14.98m, 250t by pedestal), Kamakura (Kotokuin Great Buddha/11.39m, 121t), Takaoka Great Buddha (15.85m, 13t), Hyogo Great Buddha (Nofukuji Great Buddha/ 11m, 60t) etc. It is a huge Buddha in Japan.
Mr. Naomi Uemura, (The world's first climber of the highest peaks on the five continents and a world-famous adventurer) As distinctive feature, there is the grave of Mr. Naomi Uemura, the world's first climber of the highest peaks on the five continents and a world-famous adventurer who disappeared into McKinley in the winter. (Mr. Uemura seems to have lived in Itabashi for 15 years and trained at Higashi-Itabashi Park.)
